Sexual Health

At Petter Pharmacy our experienced well trained pharmacists are at hand to advise you on any sexual health concerns you may have. All consultations are carried out in privacy and in confidence. We offer a number of sexual health services

Dispensing and Advise on Contraceptive pill (the pill)

We dispense all types of oral contraceptive pills. The pill contains artificial version of female hormones, which can help to prevent the release of an egg during ovulation hence making it harder for the sperm to reach the egg. All pills work differently and react differently, if you have any concerns or would like to discuss something with our pharmacist simply pop in.

Free emergency hormonal contraceptives

Emergency contraception can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if your contraceptive method has failed. Our pharmacist will speak to you in privacy to check if you are suitable for the morning after pill. The emergency contraception pill also known as the morning after pill should be taken within 72 (seventy two) hours of sex, the sooner you take the pill the more effective it is. This service is FREE for young people and some adults.
We use Levonelle, which contains levonorgestrel, a synthetic version of the natural hormone progesterone. It does not interfere with your regular method of contraception and can be used whilst breastfeeding. The WHO does not identify any medical condition that would mean a woman shouldn’t use Levonelle. You can also get Emergency contraception in advance if:

  • you are worried about your contraceptive method failing
  • you are going on holiday
  • you cannot get hold of emergency contraception easily

Free chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing

If you live in England, you're under 25 and are sexually active, it is recommended that you get tested every year or when you change sexual partner, as you're more likely to catch chlamydia. We also recommend you get tested if you have had unprotected sex with a new partner. Simply speak to our pharmacist who will be able to help.
The recommended test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea is simple, painless and generally very reliable. We will simply request you to provide us with a urine sample.

Free HIV and syphilis testing

Getting tested is the only way to find out if you may have HIV. If you have had sex without using a condom or have shared injecting drug equipment, you have been at risk of HIV infection.
Syphilis is very common in sexually active people, we recommend getting tested once a year or whenever they change partners. STIs can often remain undetected and if not treated can lead to serious health problems. The test is simple, painless and very reliable. We will simply request you to provide us with a urine sample
